Pupils’ (dis)interest in the teaching profession: an international comparison
Federičová, Miroslava
Many European countries, including the Czech Republic, currently face a shortage of teachers, especially quality teachers. One possible solution to this would be to support aspiring teachers at a younger age, during their studies at primary and secondary school. This study provides an empirical overview of teaching aspirations among 15-year-old school pupils in European countries based on data from the international PISA survey.

Matoušová, Daniela ; Dobiášová, Karolína (advisor) ; Angelovská, Olga (referee)
The thesis pursues a comparison of housing policy designs in Prague and Vienna with a particular focus on the target group of the elderly population. The research is based on the social construction theory of target populations by Ingram and Schneider. The aim is to map the housing situation of elderly in both cities, identify differences and similarities between the two designs and propose housing policy recommendations stemming from the analysis. The research is based on statistical data, public policy documents and on expert interviews. The thesis describes social construction theory and principles of comparative research, demographic ageing and the situation of the elderly in terms of finances, housing, health and education. Further ahead, it describes the housing policies in Prague and Vienna, moving from the general setting of these policies to specific measures concerning the elderly. Comparison of approaches towards people with disability in Francoist Spain and socialist Czechoslovakia
Wudiová, Markéta ; Mužáková, Monika (advisor) ; Němec, Zbyněk (referee)
The thesis compares the position of people with disabilities in two non-democratic regimes of the 20th century, namely Francoist Spain and socialist Czechoslovakia. The attitudes of each regime and the state initiatives taken in the field of care for people with disabilities are analysed. The possibilities for the development of the various organisations and their activities are also described. The work also focuses on two areas of the life of a person with disabilities - education and employment. The findings presented are set in the historical context of each country. The method used is the analysis and interpretation of legislation, state documents and academic publications. The comparison presents common features in the field of disability care, such as lack of interest in the issue, efforts to unify disability support organisations and their control. Both states have established segregated education for persons with disabilities. The employment of persons with disabilities depended on the form of economic establishment. Protected employment in Czechoslovakia was mediated by Svaz invalidů (the Union of the Disabled). In Spain, ONCE played a key role in providing employment for people with visual impairments. The international context and the influence of religious institutions on the form of...
Housing Prices in the Czech Republic and Slovakia: Regional Comparison
Cempírek, Petr ; Hlaváček, Michal (advisor) ; Žigraiová, Diana (referee)
The objective of the present Bachelor's thesis is to compare the behavior of housing prices in the Czech Republic and Slovakia using econometric analysis. First, the author presents the historical context and basic housing indicators. After verifying that variables in dataset are cointegrated, a panel DOLS es- timator for modelling housing prices is employed. The author uses quarterly regional data in order to analyze the response of basic housing price fundamen- tals in the two countries that formed one federation until 1992. By forming a short run equation with an error-correction term the author checks for the existence of long run housing price equilibrium and for the speed of price rever- sion to equilibrium in case it is misaligned. The author then focuses on housing price misalignments as well as their dynamics in the individual regions.
The effect of monetary stimulus on housing prices and the relationship of housing and rental prices in European countries
Hönig, Maximilian ; Kalabiška, Roman (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Michal (referee)
iv Abstract As real estate is an important part of the wealth composition of households, this the impact of the financial stimulus that was observed throughout 2020 and how it might have affected housing prices in various European countries. For this the thesis runs a Vector Error Correction Model with the following independent variables: population, exchange rate, inflation, short-term interest rate, unemployment rate and the compensation of employees. The time frame for this regression is restricted to 2000Q1 to 2019Q4 in order to exclude the housing price development throughout 2020 that is already affected by the financial stimulus. These regression results are then used in combination with the 2020 actuals of all independent variables to approximate the expected housing price without financial stimulus. This gives an indication of a potential overpricing in the markets and provides an understanding of how financial stimulus might be connected to housing prices. Another analysis in this thesis then provides an understanding of the leader-follower relationship of housing prices and rental prices and provides an analysis on how this might be connected to the level of home ownership in a particular market. JEL Classification F62, J11, R30 Keywords Real Estate, Covid-19, Financial Stimulus Title The effect...
Investigation of cross-country differences in student performance in standardized tests: the role of modern and traditional teaching methods
Ptáčníková, Marie ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Bauer, Michal (referee)
There is an ongoing debate about what teaching practices are the most effective ones in order to improve student performance. However, little is known about the impact across countries and literature is highly inconclusive. In this work, we extend the portfolio of countries and provide evidence about the role of modern and traditional teaching practices on students' test scores in 43 countries. Our analysis is performed in two steps and is a typical example of hierarchical linear modelling (HLM). In the first step, we perform student fixed effect method to account for majority of selection issues. We identify a positive, negative or no effect of modern or traditional teaching methods on student performance. These results are priceless for policy makers suggesting that there is no one-fits-all-approach towards modern or traditional teaching methods to order to improve students' test scores. As a great variation is observed, we continue further and investigate what country characteristics could explain these differences across countries. Bayesian model averaging (BMA) method supports us in a model uncertainty and a particular variable selection. Our findings indicate that cultural dimension uncertainty avoidance, which describes country's rigidity in behaviour and institutions, assists in explaining...
Communication of Czech Wine Associations (VOC) in the Digital Era
Mrázová, Anna ; Koudelková, Petra (advisor) ; Wolák, Radim (referee)
Social media has been getting more and more attention from common users as well as businesses. Although the level of social media adoption varies by sector and geographical location, all companies strive to understand which social media platforms adopt and how to effectively use them. There is a specific position for the winery sector, which is widely recognised as traditional. However, more and more people search for information, share information and purchase goods or services online, which made presence on social media inevitable even for wineries. There is a body of literature concerning wineries' social media adoption and usage, however there is none of such kind to be found in the Czech Republic. Thus, this paper's aim is to fill this gap and to find out to what extent do Czech wineries use social media and why. This paper investigates 96 responses from wineries from all regions of the Czech Republic. The evidence is that the common communication channels of Czech wineries are rather traditional, being it personal communication, email or phone. However, the level of social media adoption in comparison with Australia, Germany or New Zealand is rather high. Although Czech wineries value social media, there is a significant lack of knowledge in how to use them efficiently.
